Mobile App Discovery Phase Case Study

The Challenge

Our client had an idea for an app but needed help to establish a scope and budget for the project. They needed to work out the details of their high-level idea in terms of user stories, requirements, technical solution, and a project plan. Although they have subject matter experts on their team, they don’t have the time or expertise to design a mobile solution.

Key Deliverables

  1. Requirements & user stories
  2. Wireframes
  3. Technical approach and architecture
  4. User Interface Design for main screens
  5. Development project plan and estimate

How Optimus Helped

Through a series of brainstorming sessions, we worked with the client to turn their dream into a reality. Starting from “napkin requirements” we helped strategize by first understanding the big picture and long term goals. These sessions help set the stage for the more detailed requirements analysis.

The next step was establishing personas for the core user base. It was important to understand the users, their environments, and differing use cases.

Once the users are understood, we focus on the specific user stories and wireframes to accommodate them. We established a core set of wireframes then reviewed regularly with the client to illustrate how the final app would function. This process of iteration and review helps hone down on the important features and prioritize what is needed for version one.

Once we had finalized the feature set for version 1 and the roadmap for future versions, we designed the technical architecture for the back-end system. In this case we utilized Amazon Web Service’s scalable infrastructure and media streaming services to ensure we could support a growing user base.

At the end of the discovery phase our client had the details they needed to proceed with their project.
